Research Interest: My laboratory has worked on the chemistry, pharmacology and clinical effects of natural products (including cannabis) for over 50 years. We have isolated numerous cannabinoids, including the active constituent of cannabis, delta9-THC, and elucidated its structure. We have also identified endogenous cannabinoids in the pig brain. These fatty acid derivatives, named anandamide and 2-AG, are the agonists of a major new biological system called the endocannabinoid system. Most of my current research focuses on the numerous anandamide-like compounds in the mammalian body, many of which are involved in basic biological reactions, such as bone formation, vasodilation, head trauma, addiction, etc. We have also developed novel cannabinoids and anandamide-like compounds which are being developed as drugs by pharma companies.

Welcome to the Laboratory of Cancer Biology and Cannabinoid Research at the Technion‘s Faculty of Biology. Although we are a new lab, in the past two years we have updated our lab to work with the most modern and innovative equipment, we recruited a multidisciplinary team of professionals, and we have established many local and international collaborations. Collectively with access to these resources, we can ask and answer almost any question in the field of medical cannabis and we are today one of the leading cannabis laboratories in the world. Our highly trained team of skilled professionals work in synergy and complement each other to achieve the highest level of results.

Ethan Russo, MD, is a board-certified neurologist, psychopharmacology researcher, and former Senior Medical Advisor to GW Pharmaceuticals. He served as study physician to GW Pharmaceuticals for three Phase III clinical trials of Sativex.

He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania (Psychology) and the University of Massachusetts Medical School, before residencies in Pediatrics in Phoenix, Arizona and in Child and Adult Neurology at the University of Washington in Seattle. He was a clinical neurologist in Missoula, Montana for 20 years in a practice with a strong chronic pain component. In 1995, he pursued a 3-month sabbatical doing ethnobotanical research with the Machiguenga people in Parque Nacional del Manu, Peru. He joined GW as a full-time consultant in 2003.

He has held faculty appointments in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Montana, in Medicine at the University of Washington, and as visiting professor, Chinese Academy of Sciences.He is currently Past-President of the International Cannabinoid Research Society, and is former Chairman of the International Association for Cannabinoid Medicines.

He is author of Handbook of Psychotropic Herbs, co-editor of Cannabis and Cannabinoids: Pharmacology, Toxicology and Therapeutic Potential, and author of The Last Sorcerer: Echoes of the Rainforest. He was founding editor of Journal of Cannabis Therapeutics, selections of which were published as books: Cannabis Therapeutics in HIV/AIDS, Women and Cannabis: Medicine, Science and Sociology, Cannabis: From Pariah to Prescription, and Handbook of Cannabis Therapeutics: From Bench to Bedside. He has also published numerous book chapters, and over thirty articles in neurology, pain management, cannabis, and ethnobotany. His research interests have included correlations of historical uses of cannabis to modern pharmacological mechanisms, phytopharmaceutical treatment of migraine and chronic pain, and phytocannabinoid-serotonergic and –vanilloid interactions.

It is the gold standard for the education and dissemination of clinically relevant information in the emerging field of cannabinoid and endocannabinoid medicine.

Our focus is on the application of clinical and physiological studies of cannabinoids and the endocannabinoid system. We provide professional and legal support in the field of cannabinoid medicine. We educate both professionals and the lay public on cannabinoids and the endocannabinoid system.

International Cannabinoid Research Society

The ICRS is a non-political, non-religious organization dedicated to scientific research in all fields of the cannabinoids, ranging from biochemical, chemical and physiological studies of the endogenous cannabinoid system to studies of the abuse potential of recreational Cannabis. 

In addition to acting as a source for impartial information on Cannabis and the cannabinoids, the main role of the ICRS is to provide an open forum for researchers to meet and discuss their research.

Sean McAllister, Ph.D.

Dr. McAllister and colleagues have combined CB1 and CB2 (cloned cannabinoid receptor) agonists with non-psychotropic cannabinoids, to synergistically increase their anticancer effects in cell lines and animal models. The non-toxic and non-psychotropic cannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD) inhibits human breast cancer cell proliferation and invasion through differential modulation of the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) pathways.
